What is MD-MATRIX and how does it work?

MD-MATRIX Tropocollagen is a preparation for needle mesotherapy by Italian company GUNA Medical Device (Milan), specialising in aesthetic medicine preparations based on physiological active ingredients. Tropocollagen – how does it differ from regular collagen?

Tropocollagen is the fundamental structural unit of collagen fibres — a collagen precursor made of three polypeptide chains twisted into a triple helix. Unlike high-molecular-weight collagen preparations, tropocollagen has a smaller molecular weight, enabling deeper tissue penetration after injection and direct action on fibroblasts. Its presence in the extracellular space activates fibroblasts via mechanotransduction, stimulating them to synthesise new collagen (neocollagenogenesis) and elastin chains. The result is dermal matrix rebuilding, improved skin structure and reduced cellulite visibility.

Citric acid and nicotinamide – cellular metabolism and antioxidation

• Citric acid — a key metabolite of the Krebs cycle. By stimulating this metabolic pathway it increases ATP production in cells, accelerates fibroblast metabolism and supports connective tissue regeneration. Also regulates tissue pH and normalises microcirculation.
• Nicotinamide (vitamin B3, niacin) — a precursor of NAD⁺ and NADP⁺, coenzymes essential for redox reactions. Acts as an antioxidant, improves microcirculation and tissue oxygenation, inhibits subcutaneous inflammation and strengthens the skin barrier. Cellulite – why does mesotherapy work where topical products cannot?

Cellulite (gynoid lipodystrophy) is a structural disorder of the subcutaneous tissue involving remodelling of connective tissue septa, localised oedema, microcirculation impairment and pathological adipocyte distribution. How does tropocollagen differ from regular collagen used in mesotherapy?

Tropocollagen is the precursor to mature collagen — a smaller molecule (triple polypeptide chain before final cross-linking) that after injection penetrates tissue more deeply and directly activates fibroblasts to produce new collagen. Unlike hydrolysed collagen in topical cosmetics, injected tropocollagen acts as a biological signal for fibroblasts, triggering a neocollagenogenesis cascade at the extracellular matrix level. The effect is deeper and longer-lasting than oral supplementation or creams.

Why does MD-MATRIX contain citric acid?

Citric acid is a key metabolite of the Krebs cycle — the main ATP-producing pathway in cells.
